5 Ideas That Will Make You Think About Printers

By Stephen Hoskie

Modern day laser printers are useless without toner cartridges. The toner cartridge inside of a laser printer is responsible for actually putting the ink on the paper. Toner cartridges have many internal parts. The ink is transferred to the paper by an electrostatic charged drum and then fused to the paper by heated rollers. Most printers consist of two consumable parts which are the a drum unit and a toner cartridge. However, there are a number of other printers which include the drum unit in the toner cartridge. The toner cartridge must be changed along with the drum unit in this style of printer. This becomes too costly for most people.

There are all sorts of manufacturers of toner cartridges. OEM toner cartridges are the genuine cartridges made by the original manufacturer. These OEM toner cartridges usually offer a guarantee. OEM cartridges are much more expensive than others, but the peace of mind is worth it to most people. OEM toner cartridges can be bought cheaper at special retailers. Off-brand or compatible toner cartridges are sometimes called generic because they are manufactured by third party corporations and named differently. These generic cartridges must have a different appearance because of the US patent laws. There is said to be a trade-off between price and reliability when buying OEM versus compatible toner cartridges.

Most times air jet milling is used to try to create very specific sized particles that make up the toner in the cartridge. Many times air jet milling does not achieve the set particle size consistently enough. Since air jet milling is not good enough for some companies, they are starting to chemically grow toner particles so they can control the size and shape more consistently.

Different toner cartridges can come in very different prices. Sometimes certain toner cartridges can even be more expensive than the actual printer. This only happens if the printer is very cheap though. Some people who own a cheap laser printer simply throw out the printer when the cartridges go empty, not knowing that printers only come with cartridges that are a third full. If consumers truly need to save money they should buy generic compatible toner cartridges for a nicer printer.

There are certain ways to clean toner cartridges. Hot or warm water should be used to clean toner cartridges. A traditional vacuum cleaner should never be used to clean toner. Use an electrically conductive hose and a HEPA filter to clean spilt toner.
