Star Wars: The Old Republic Critique: Just What A Different Mmo

By Aimee Whisted

SWTOR, or Star Wars: The Old Republic, may be a newcomer to the game, but it has already accumulated well over a million game subscribers and is now known as the fastest growing online game ever. A lot of gamers feel that SWTOR is just like all the other MMOs on the market, but dressed up in a Star Wars theme. So what is it about this game that makes so many players continue their subscription and why have PC gamers embraced it?

The SWTOR storyline is set thousands of years before the rise of Darth Vader or any of the other famous Star Wars film characters. The Republic and the Empire have just signed an agreement called the Treaty of Coruscant which has brought about peace between the two groups. Given the groups history, peace is not something that would last very long. Hostility is beginning to rise between the two yet again and it is only a matter of time before the treaty is broken. War is certainly on the horizon.

The game starts in the middle of the conflict where players must decide their loyalty. This is no easy task as the war is just beginning. A person needs to decide who they want to pledge their allegiance to and fight till the death. The Sith Empire and Republic have two advanced classes and four major classes to choose from. The Republic has the glory of the Jedi, while the Imperial are known for the overpowering Sith.

As mentioned before, each one of these main classes has two specialized, or advanced, classes within. You won't be able to choose your specialization until level 10. In general, these advanced classes are much more powerful and they come with unique abilities. In order to make the right choice, you'll need to think about your play style and what role you'd like to play while in groups or fighting solo. Some classes are strictly defensive while others are predominantly offensive or even stealth. The class that you choose will affect how you play the game and also how the story progresses.

The Star Wars galaxy is filled with things for players to do while they advance through the leveling process. Players can complete quests, engage in epic PvP (player vs. player) battles or defeat bosses in flashpoints (commonly referred to as raids). Each activity requires a different play style and technique. While going through the game, players will pick up new gear and supplies. Once they've reached level 16, they even get their very own ship! This ship is customized to each class and allows you to travel through the galaxy in style or take part in space combat missions.

Altogether, SWTOR is a fun and engaging online game. It includes all of the familiar aspects of traditional MMORPGs and is really starting to gain a reputation in the gaming industry. In time, it may overtake the top spot for the most popular MMO.
