What does Unlocked really mean when purchasing a smartphone?

By Chris Sissy

An unlocked smartphone means one of two factors; you can use it on any network carrier or you can install any application on it. With the cost of current smartphones running to a few hundred dollars, the mobile phone producers and the network providers must give some appealing options in order to get users to upgrade their phone. The most widespread approach is to give the mobile phone totally free or with a serious discount and in return you agree to a contract in which you accept to pay a minimum sum every month. The sting in the tail is that while you get the most up-to-date smartphone worth hundreds of dollars, it is often locked to the carrier you signed the contract with. Thus, if you want to switch providers or change to a month by month plan when the contract ends you will have a tough time taking your mobile phone with you.

The easiest way to find out if your phone is locked to a network provider is to put in a sim card from another carrier and see if you get a signal and you can make and receive calls. If you can't then chances are you have a locked smartphone. The 'lock' isn't a physical lock but a program hidden within the OS? This program checks that the network service provider is valid and inhibits any attempt to hook up with a different carrier.

It's possible, however to some degree risky, to unlock a phone either by entering a series of numbers from your keypad or hooking it up to a computer which has some software to erase or reprogram the core files. You'll not locate any retailers offering this service but certainly small, individually owned cell phone suppliers might offer this service for a fee if you request. In spite of this, be warned that if you opt to unlock your mobile phone to be used on some other carrier it probably voids the warranty. There's always the chance it may erase the system memory permanently after which you'll have a mass of plastic about as effective as a brick.

A primary reason you might like to get the device unlocked, and one of the driving motives many attempt to do so is that if you're traveling in another country for any amount of time you want to keep your mobile phone but use a local sim card to reduce expenses on phone calls, texts and data transfer. A locked phone will not provide the freedom to achieve this therefore, the sole option is to get the phone unlocked.

The other kind of locking is the restrictions put in place by the producer of the device. Apple iPhone is famous for this because Steve Jobs made a decision that he doesn't want people fooling with the OS or adding unapproved apps. This has given rise to the term 'jailbreaking' for the iPhone. Lots of individuals attempt to break away and unlock their iPhone by way of jailbreaking it. Nevertheless, doing so voids the warranty and support.

In contrast, Google's Android cell phones are open source and offer the freedom and flexibility to individualize anything. Developers have the freedom to build and install any sort of application which many argue makes the Android a first-class OS since there is no need to unlock it, jailbreak it or circumnavigate limitations that have been put in place. In spite of this, many network providers may lock the unit to their network and you might want unlocking services from a neighborhood cellular store.
