What One Should Understand About A DMX Merger

By Teri Farley

What One Should Know About A DMX Merger is that it is part of a system that is used to control the lighting that is seen in studios, theme parks and many other venues. The abbreviation stands for Digital MultipleX and is short for DMX512. This means that the lights are controlled digitally through the use of computers and software that is specifically designed for this purpose.

Many times, one might visit a theme park or a concert and see all of the lights that are used. There might be various effects that are displayed which can make the experience quite pleasurable. This is possible through the technology used to control the effects that one can see. This is not done using one lighting source but several and in order to control all of them, a digital system is used.

The standard for digital communication networks is known as DMX512. The lighting and fixtures that one sees on any stage is controlled using this system. It involves a controller in the form of a PC and fixtures which emit light. The PC is used to control how the light functions and its various effects. The name DMX stands for Digital MultipleX and involves 512 different channels.

Each of these channels have a range of different levels and each level controls a specific result of the lighting fixture and the light itself. Sometimes it is necessary to have a way to control different channels so that they flow from one source. This is why a DMX Merger box is used as it can take channels from two or more levels and merge them into one.

Each level of that color wheel channel might control the different shades of that color wheel in order to produce a different effect. These and other effects have to be well planned in order for things to run smoothly. This is where a professional lighting technician comes in, as they are trained to know how to operate the equipment that it is used correctly in lighting the stage.

One also has to realize that a DMX Merger only merges two or more DMX512 sources together. So a DMX USB interface can merge with a DMX lighting controller as long as they both have an out signal. This gives an individual greater control of the lighting that is used on stage in various performances such as the theater or opera.

The people that work on these lights are known as lighting technicians. They are usually behind the scenes directing the audiences attention where it matters most at a specific point in time. This was all done by hand at one point, but now everything is digital which makes the job easier to handle.

A DMX Merger is used control various elements in creative lighting which helps the production of a show to go smoothly. This is a long way from having everything done manually and allows for greater control. This allows for the performers of any venues to put on the best show. It also allows the audience to get the most out of what is being presented to them.
